As the shuttle's ramp touched the deck, Mark started down it, followed closely by James. Already waiting for them was a young man in services gold. "Welcome aboard, commander," the crewman said, "Commander Byrne would like to see you once you get settled in. Should I arrange for your belongings to be transferred to your quarters?"
"That would be appreciated, thank you," Mark said, putting a hand on James' shoulder and steering him toward the doors to the corridor. Along the way, they passed other personnel unloading cargo from shuttles and sorting it for transport to the proper departments. All in all, it was essentially organized chaos.
Once they cleared the busy shuttlebay, they found the corridor to be just as heavily trafficked. Weaving amongst the various personnel, the two of them managed to reach the relative safety of the turbolift. As the doors closed, James said, "Deck two." The turbolift began its ascent and Mark looked at his son.
"Something tells me you were doing more than just perusing those specs," he joked. James gave a short laugh, but didn't say anything. "She's certainly bigger than the Houston, that's for sure," Mark continued, "Lots more room for you to roam about."
"Will you talk to the captain about my studies," James asked, hoping his father would remember to discuss the possibility of him engaging in more practical studies aboard the Endeavour.
"I'll be sure to ask," Mark said, noticing the smile that was creeping at the corners of James' mouth. The young man seemed really eager to find out if the captain would approve of a more hands-on type study schedule. He couldn't blame him either.
The lift slowed to a halt and the doors hissed open. They made their way down the corridor until they reached the door to what would be their quarters. Mark keyed the lock and the doors hissed open, revealing the large accommodations. Like the rest of the ship, their quarters was certainly larger than their housing on the Houston had been.
Mark took a few steps into the room and surveyed it. The main living area had a small table surrounded by four chairs, a sitting area with a couch and two chairs, as well as a desk to one side for Mark to work. Meanwhile, James poked his head into one of two sleeping areas off the main room. This one had a single bed and a workspace as well. Mark's sleeping area was similarly arranged, minus the extra workspace. It seemed the quartermaster had been thorough when preparing for their arrival. A feat that must not have been easy for such mass arrivals.
"If you want to go check in with the captain, dad, I can wait for our stuff to get here," James said. He hoped that the sooner his father met with the captain, the more likely he'd remember to ask.
"You just don't want me to forget," Mark replied, shaking his finger at his son. James shook his head, then nodded. "Alright," he said, throwing up his hands in mock defeat, "If you insist."
"Thanks dad," James said, plopping down into a chair and reading over the PADD from earlier. Mark shook his head and headed back out into the corridor. It was time to report in.
