Acting First Officer's Log: Stardate: 64780.1

I'm recording this from the Captain's ready room. I wish I could express the way that I feel at the moment adequately but under the circumstances and the relatively high chance that some bug's going to fly out of the bulkhead at me at any time so I suppose that's as good a reason as any to keep my personal prattling brief.

We were sitting in the dark for a while until emergency power came back online. It gave me time to think. Time to consider the crew that have undoubtedly been lost to these aliens. Medical scanners have indicated that we lost Lieutenant Commander Edroski and the small contingent of the crew that she was with. The scanners indicate that the Commander and her accompanying team were killed somewhere around deck fifteen. What the hell they were doing down there, I suppose we'll never know.

In the mean time, the Captain has taken the dubious decision of making me acting First Officer. I think I'm more skeptical about his appointment than the rest of the crew are, quite frankly. The team on the bridge, those poor kids with their rifles and the glint of fear in their once bright eyes, seem to have taken to me giving orders with greater ease than I ever could. I'm not cut out for this job. Starfleet have never even considered me even worth commissioning. That's what you get if you're a criminal, I suppose. Reformed or not, no-one will ever trust you.

No-one except these kids and Benjamin, for some reason. Now we're standing with only some hair-brained scheme between us and certain death and all I can do is stand and watch scanners and record log entries in a ready room that looks like it's been blown apart by a concussion grenade. The sooner we get out of this, I can go back to writing Intel reports and Byrne can get a new first officer the better. That's if we even get that far.
