Arrival of Chief of Security

Posted on Wed Nov 25th, 2009 @ 5:16am by Lieutenant JG Charlie Hamilton & Captain Benjamin Byrne

Mission: They Arrive on Tuesday...
Location: Shuttle enroute to Uss Endeavour, then onboard the Uss Endeavour.
Timeline: MD08, 1410

The new assignment had Charlie very excited. His new promotion and transfer to the USS Endeavour as her new Chief of Security/Tactical had come through, and now, here he was, about to step out into the next adventure in his young life.

Along with the excitement came a certain amount of anxiety, not in a bad way, he knew his duty well, and could perform it more than adequately, but anxiety in the sense of having to get to know a whole new crew to him, and they him also.

His life was made a bit more bearable in that sense with the fact that he'd been allowed to transfer with him, his top security team squad leader from his previous ship, one Shr'Nesh Karadis. Though at times she could be a true royal pain in the backside, she kept him on the straight and narrow.

"Ok lazy bones, time to haul arse and twine and get off the shuttle, we're here..." Karadis said to Charlie.

"Just five more minutes mum, I promise I'll get up" Charlie said back, from his comfortable seat at the back of the shuttle.

"Oh ha ha" Karadis replied, throwing Charlie's ruck sack at him.

Opening his eye and squinting at the squad leader he said "That was a bit harsh wasn't it?"

"We need to get off here now so you can check in on time...Sir" Karadis said,

"Ah, yes, the time....you're right" Charlie said, noticing the chronometer himself.

After disembarking from the shuttle, gaining permission to come aboard the USS Endeavour itself and entering in both his and Karadis security codes into the ships computer, Charlie was told that the CO was in his ready room.

Within minutes, both he and Karadis were on the bridge and outside the ready room itself.

Turning to face Karadis, Charlie asked "Do I look presentable?"

"In a lived in sort of way, I suppose so" Karadis answered casually.

"You know, I could have chosen to leave you behind you know, instead of bringing you here" Charlie said.

"But then who'd kick your backside at chess?" Karadis answered.

Charlie was about to reply, but Karadis beat him to it and pressed the klaxon on the ready room door "Now go in there and introduce yourself Sir!" she smiled.

Ben looked up briefly from his desk as he heard the chime on the door sounded, and he called "Come!"

Bracing himself as the doors slid open, Charlie took a deep breath and then walked into the CO's ready room.

"Ah, Lieutenant," Ben said, as he saw who had entered the room. "Welcome aboard. I apologise for the rapid assignment orders, but we're now running on a tight schedule for launch."

Standing before the CO's desk, Charlie made no eye contact, that being an unwritten rule when meeting and talking with a senior officer. Still at attention he replied "That's alright Sir, better to 'strike whilst the irons hot' so people say."

"Glad to see it's caused no problems," Ben replied, noticing the stiff way the man stood and spoke to him and the lack of eye contact, but not responding to it. He'd learnt over the years that some people simply preferred to remain that way, at least until they were more familiar with their CO, and so long as non of the crew snapped to attention and dropped what they were doing every time Ben walked past, he was happy to wait it out and allow the crew to get used to him. "I've had Commander Anderson assigning tasks to the security department until now, so I'd recommend checking in with him to get a feel for how the teams have been going so far."

"Very good Sir" Charlie replied "But with respect, once I take over the department, I'll be checking it from top to bottom, along with my Assistant Chief, to see how the set up is, and what needs tightening up. My methods will be different to anything they've had before, as will the way they react to a new officer taking over, but we'll have to get used to one another quickly if we're to make the best out of the situation Sir" Charlie added, this time making short eye contact with Commander Byrne, before looking away and straight ahead of himself again.

Ben nodded, glad that his security chief planned to be authoritative with his department. It was one of the departments on a starship that required a more authoritative head, due to the nature of the job - other departments, like counselling had more leeway typically. "Very good, Lieutenant." he said aloud. "Is there anything else?" he asked, after a moment.

"I'd like to thank you for this opportunity to serve on the Endeavour Sir. She's a fine looking ship, and has everything that a crew could ask for by way of materials. I hope that as a crew, we can do her justice. If I may, I'd like your permission to start my duties officially now and get right to it" Charlie said.

"Permission granted," Ben replied. "Dismissed."
