Fond Memories

Posted on Wed Jan 20th, 2010 @ 9:56pm by Captain Benjamin Byrne

Mission: Metronian Diplomacy
Location: The Great Barrier Reef (Crew Lounge)
Timeline: MD07 1200hrs

It had been three days since they had left orbit of Cestus III, and Sarah (NPC) reflected on how it had taken just about that long for her son Jacob's excitement about seeing the planet's surface during their shoreleave die down, as she gazed out of the large windows at the star-streaked space of warp travel. She'd taken him down on the first day they had arrived, after Benjamin had spoken with the Vice Admiral, and he had loved it. The boy had hardly been deprived of the chance for fresh air when they reached a suitable such colony back on Benjamin's old ship, and he had full use of the holodeck when others hadn't booked time for themselves, but colonies were few and far between, and the holodeck had soon lost its glory to the young boy. The most common thing he ever saw outside of the Nova class starship had been Federation space stations, which had all looked exactly the same on the inside, only bigger.

She didn't look around as she heard the doors to 'the Reef' open, knowing that it was approaching lunchtime for the ship's crew, and the room would likely become packed very shortly, but she did turn her head slightly when she felt Benjamin's arms wrap around her waist from behind as he kissed her softly on the back of her head.

"Penny for your thoughts?" he asked quietly.

"Just thinking of how excited Jacob was when I took him down to Cestus," she replied, a smile appearing on her lips as she turned back towards the stars, leaning back against her husband. "He really does love playing in the grass, you know."

"I can remember what he was like in the Stonehenge simulation back on the New York," Ben replied. "He spent all of his time chasing a dog through the grass, rather than paying any attention to the rocks themselves."

"He is just a boy, Ben," Sarah said fondly. "I don't think he really understood Stonehenge as anything other than a pile of odd rocks."

"No, I suppose not. Where is the little terror, anyway?"

Sarah turned around in Ben's embrace to face him, putting her arms on his shoulders. "Off in the library, doing some homework I set him. I told him to be back in our quarters in about fifteen minutes' time for lunch,"

"Looks like we have the next fifteen minutes to ourselves, then," Benjamin replied, smiling as the two of them silently agreed to head for their quarters to spend some quality time alone together. It was rare for them to have any time alone together other than at night with Ben's workload on the ship, though Ben guessed he'd have a lot more time to relax during the three week trip to the Metrons.
