Tool or person?

Posted on Fri Feb 12th, 2010 @ 5:37pm by Captain Benjamin Byrne & Lieutenant Chihiro Ogino MD

Mission: Metronian Diplomacy
Location: Primary Sickbay
Timeline: MD05 1320hrs

As Kinu (NPC) stepped through the doors to the primary sickbay, she was still amazed at how large it was. She'd seen the secondary sickbay on deck 16 already, and it was almost identical to the one she remembered back on the Highlander, when she was on assignment in the Gamma Quadrant, through the Bajoran Wormhole. But this sickbay, well... first she was still in a bit of awe for a ship with two sickbays, having grown used to smaller vessels, but even if this were the ship's only sickbay, it was impressive. The large room was decorated in the sterile white of most medical centres, which made it seem even more spacious, and it was large enough to accomodate at least half of the whole engineering team.

Shaking her head to rid herself of the feeling, she turned in search of the Chief Medical Officer, but instead found a young Ensign moving through the beds. "Excuse me," the Bajoran called out. "Could you tell me where Lieutenant Ogino is?"

"She's over there ensign" a nurse said nicely.

Nodding her thanks to the medical officer, Au'Beck headed in the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, tapping on the glass next to the door to her office as she reached it. "Doctor. Lieutenant Kinu Au'Beck," she said, offering her free hand to shake.

Chihiro turned round to face her. "Ah hello Lieutenant" she said nicely shaking her hand. "Is there something I can do for you?" she asked nicely.

"Actually, I'm here to run some diagnostics on your EMH. A pre-flight check if you will - it hasn't been run on this ship since installation," Kinu replied.

"Ah I see, well you can have it, I've never been too keen on them" Chihiro replied with a smile. "I do believe the main console can access the sickbay's holographic systems" she explained.

Nodding her thanks, Au'Beck moved over towards the main console and tapped a few commands. "You know Doctor, I hear this version is a lot more sociable than the last eight," she said as she worked. "Computer, activate EMH."

With a slight fuzz, a young woman appeared, with light brown hair and fair skin. If nothing, she was certainly much more attractive than any of the previous EMHs, who had all in Kinu's opinion been based off either ageing men or barely pubescent boys. "Please state the nature of the medical emergency," the hologram said.

"I'm just running a few diagnostics on your program," Kinu said, as she tapped a few more controls on the console.

"Understood, Lieutenant," the EMH replied.

After a short amount of time had passed, Kinu looked over towards the medical officer who she had greeted when she first entered sickbay - he was still working around the room, and not saying much. "So what do you think Ensign?" Kinu asked, trying to strike up a conversation.

"Interesting, seems much better than the mark one" he replied looking at the holographic woman.

"So anything up with it?" Chihiro asked looking at the group.

"There's a slight misalignment in the tactile matrix," Kinu said, her voice lowered in concentration. "Catch this," she instructed the EMH, as she threw her tricorder to it. The device passed into the program, despite her reaching out to catch it - but it didn't pass straight through. Kinu began tapping controls on the console to access the subroutines controlling the hologram's ability to touch objects.

Chihiro watched in interest. "That's not good" she said.

"It's easily fixed," Kinu said, as she tapped a few commands. First, she disabled the tactile subroutines completely - and the tricorder fell through the hologram's body to the floor with a thump. Then, she accessed a holodeck program at random - one that she knew worked - and copied the tactile subroutines over into the EMH program.

"EMH, can you pick up that tricorder, please?" She asked, and watched as the simulated woman bent down to retrieve the device and walked forward to hand it to her. "Thank you," Kinu replied, as she took the small computer and attached it to her belt. She tapped a few controls to retreat out of the EMH's programming and lock the code down, before saying; "Computer, deactivate EMH."

She then turned to the doctor, and stated; "She's fully functional."

"Good, hopefully I won't be needing her. But its ncie to know I have a backup" Chihiro said nicely. "Thankyou" she added.

"You're welcome," Kinu said as she packed up her kit. "Let me know if you have any issues with her or any of your other systems." With that, she nodded farewell to the two medical officers, and left the sickbay.
