Today's Duties

Posted on Wed Feb 10th, 2010 @ 3:39am by Warrant Officer Kai Tsenzori

Mission: Metronian Diplomacy
Location: USS Endeavour - Variable locations
Timeline: Mission Day 06 0430hrs

Kai awoke early, earlier than he was supposed to have done, maybe it was because he was wondering just how his weeks on the Endeavour were going to flow. That being said, as he done up his uniform, a hard days work always flowed right into the next. Checking his clipboard he looked at his daily tasks.

1.Monitor fluctuations between Conduit 832a and Conduit 823b
2.Re align – Phaser Sub-bank 64
3.Attend to Holo Emitters on HoloDeck 1 – Specifically Emitter 51beta
4.Repair Emergency Back up system 32gi
5.Replace transporter pad in transporter room 2
6.Check weaponry, shielding and the replicator in the mess hall

All of which were notable tasks to get on with, of course he had already prioritised them the night before but one thing he hadn't noticed, was that he was only going to the Engineering Bay at the end of his shift it seemed. That was, if the Holo Emitters didn't have anything seriously wrong. Collecting together his repair kit he spoke up into his otherwise empty room.

“Computer, inform nearby crew that Jefferies Tube 12a is under repairs.”

“Affirmative.” Came the monotone voice, he was going to have to get his own voice one of these days but he dismissed further work from his mind as he picked up his tool case and headed towards Jefferies Tube 12a.

Time 0500hrs

Although he was aware the night shift was fairly uneventful he wasn't fully prepared for the fact that he would meet no one on the way to the Jefferies tube. Inputting the command to release the hatch he pushed his briefcase down the tube and followed in after it being careful to shut the door behind him. The tube after all wasn't a very long one, in fact it barely stretched fifty meters giving him an easy time for this job. The conduits were within reach of each other and he opened his tool box and took out his engineering tricorder before taking readings from both. The readings were skewed, so taking out another instrument he proceeded to clear out the data he didn't want, “Interesting, it's getting feedback from a plasma conduit... Computer, attach Plasma Conduit 23 to tomorrows task list and post a message to the chief that Plasma Conduit 23 is recursing.”

“Affirmative.”

Kai shut his tricorder down and packed up his equipment and emerged back out of the hatch, “Computer what's the time.”

“The time is now 0512hrs,” Meaning he'd spent only twelve minutes on that task, he was ahead, but that didn't mean something else wasn't going to go wrong. Without another thought he headed for the turbo lift. Unfortunately the phaser bank he needed was in the saucer section.
“Deck four.” Kai called out with some authority just after another crew member stepped in. It seemed the crewman was from the operations sector but he had never seen them before. The crewman disembarked on deck 6 leaving the lift empty upto deck four.

“Computer, inform all Engineer's near to Phaser Bank 64 that I'm about to be taking the sub-bank offline for realignment.”

“Affirmative.” With that he headed towards the phaser bank. Weaponry was a little out of his jurisdiction usually but the Chief had prioritised other things above a sub-bank, meaning it was a job left to him. Walking into what appeared to be a dead end corridor right at the other end of the ship near the nose of the vessel in fact he placed his tool case down and pulled off a panel, exposing numerous circuits underneath. Then he proceeded to open his tool case, take out the appropriate instruments, including his tricorder and he started to take it off line. It wasn't an easy thing to take off line as unfortunately for him it was wired into a biometric gel-pack to help it stay alive even under constant use.

It was a tricky task at it required some logical thinking on his part before he was able to begin realignment at which time the task became ridiculously easy, infact it involved only brushing an instrument against it and it was done. Connecting the phaser sub-bank up again he replaced the panel, packed away his tool case and spoke out.

“Task 1 and 2 completed, please inform the necessary personnel and the time?”

“Affirmative, the time is now 0600hrs.” That stunned him, he'd spent an hour trying to realign the phaser bank, well, almost an hour and that was bad enough. That meant he had to hurry if he wanted to get his third task out of the way before breakfast. Taking that into account he took the turbo lift almost directly to Holodeck 1.

0610hrs HoloDeck 1

He attempted to walk into the holodeck only to find a simulation in progress. It was a training program, specifically kendo, overriding the access, he walked in and headed towards one of the corners of the room, slid off a panel and got to work. For some reason he didn't think he had been noticed, what with the constant fighting going on, he wasn't even sure who the crew members were.

Unfortunately though the task wasn't so easy and he was going to have to go to the observation room in order to repair a switch in a console. Specifically the switch merely changed where power circulated, if his repairs on the holo emitter had revealed anything, it was that the switch in question had stuck, overloading it. Stepping into the observation room Kai walked over to the panel where the holo emitter should be and found that not only had the switch blown completely but the circuits had blended together. It was a wonder that the holodeck was working at all.

“Computer, inform the Chief that there's a Priority 5, class Pseudo incident in Holodeck 1 Observation Room, and that a shut down of power conduit 19 will be required.”

“Affirmative.”

There was something that intrigued him though. The way they had melted suggested that it wasn't just a blown circuit, but if there was any foul play then why not knock out the whole system, what else did this switch affect.

“Computer, what time is it?”

“0703hrs.”

Just an hour, well it wasn't much, “Cancel all further bookings and inform all those affected.”

“Affirmative.”

“Oh and where does the switch in panel 6a lead to.”

“The switch in panel 6a, changes power from the Holodeck to the Emergency Environmental Backup.”

In other words if the ship started to lose power it would be able to re-route the power to the Environmental Systems. It wasn't exactly a flaw in the design because there were many other ways to re-route power, but this was an interesting incident to note down and attached it to his data pad that he carried inside his tool case, this was more of interest to the security personnel rather than him after all. That also meant he could cross the next off his list 32gi was part of the Environmental system and it was a good bet that this switch was the problem.

That meant that he only had two jobs left and instead of heading to do them he instead opted for a break and headed for the lounge area. After all, he had managed to get almost everything done and thankfully these were the only tasks given to him before he was allowed to clock off for the rest of the day.

Location: Lounge
Time: 0730

Ordering a drink he retreated to a table where he cleaned his instruments and nursed his drink relaxing as everyone seemed to ignore him. That was just the way he liked it. Blending into the background as best he could.

It wasn't long however before he had finished his drink and he had to get on with the rest of the job, besides, if he got them finished early enough he might actually get a hold of his senior officer before he clocked on for his shift.

On his way to the transporter he detoured to cargo bay 1 to grab a spare transporter pad. Of course this was something he'd planned before so that he didn't have to head to the main replicator at the beginning of the shift, it was usually crammed with people wanting extra parts, more materials or if the chef got around it extra ingredients, all of which meant it was busy, not though, during the late shift it was virtually empty at that time and last night, he'd been there making sure the transporter pad was ready.

Quickly heading up from the Cargo Bay to the Transporter room he opened the door.

“Ah, Kai, hows things?” The expert technician waved. Of course, Kai just waved him off without much of a reply and set about pulling out one pad and replacing it with another. This wasn't technical at all, the power circuits ran on a parallel system meaning as long as he cut the power to the one pad the others wouldn't be affected at least not negatively, slotting in the pad and reconnecting the connections he waved to the technician on his way out, already heading to his final task of the day.

The again, his final task was in theory larger than the rest of the tasks put together he had devised a simple method and one that meant if other crewman added an extra minute to their working schedule the amount of work he'd have to do would be cut down drastically, which he hoped was the case. That left only one thing left to do, apparently, the Food Replicator in the mess hall was producing gravy instead of water, the report suggested that it was just a simple pattern error, a quick run over it should suffice and then it was a clean day.

Location: Mess-hall
Time: 0945hrs

Kai had planned this out meticulously, yet for some unknown reason he'd managed to turn water into a burgundy sweet. The pattern buffer was one way of doing it, but he hadn't found any errors with that, thus Kai had ran a simple diagnostic, revealing a cascading failure on a function routine. A function routine was simply a command in the software buffer and in this instance it changed the flavour and then the consistency of whatever it produced. Now although he'd identified a problem it wasn't the problem which was why he was now getting wine.

With a row of test cups of the liquids lining up beside the machine he was starting to get a little irritated with the machine and diagnostic after diagnostic was revealing problems with the machine some on the coding levels others on the hardware levels. This was what had taken him the best part of two hours. Finally he just kicked the machine and the next thing he knew it was producing glass after glass of water. Rolling his eyes he got back into the system only to find the thing that was causing the small bursts of power surges and the cascading failures was a corrupt memory value.

Finally he was done for the day and he returned to his small room which he had managed to barter with an operations officer only two days ago. It was a very small room containing only a single bunk and an en-suite which its dimensions were 3x3x3 metres. This however was the best he was going to get for his rank as far as he was aware and to him it was home, picking up a data tablet from his desk he laid back on his bed and started to fill in the reports.

That was the end of the day for him as once he filled out his reports he filed them off to his superiors. Then he laid his head on the pillow closing his eyes to relax and before he knew it, he was fast asleep napping until he would wake up five hours later to fill out his next to do list. This was how Kai liked to conduct his days and he had no intention of stopping with this method, as long as he kept his head down, he'd stay out of trouble and out of the way.
