Mission:
Divisions
Location: Endeavor, sickbay
The medical bay on the Endeavour was in full life of activity. Kalin was moving frantically around, rummaging in cupboards, looking under beds, and generally getting flustered. "Where is it! I need that key!" He cried out to anyone willing to listen. The only people who could here him were Nina, and Rackham, the hologram and chief medical officer. At this time Nina was calmly trying to lure Kalin into one of the beds and get him to relax.
"Kalin, look at me take a deep breath, and hold-yes and breath out...in...out...in... good, good. Now slowly, close your eyes and imagine a calm ocean, no wind, no waves, just the gentle sound of bird song." Kalin took all of this in, and followed her instructions. It was not working.
"Nina, you’re supposed to have a calming nature, and soothing personality. I need to be calm. I am a doctor. I need that key Rackham took, SO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET THAT CHIP INSIDE YOUR PROGRAMMING TO WORK!" Nina blinked at this but nodded patiently. She picked up a hypospray on the bed side, and pressed it against his neck. A faint hiss was heard as it injected the anti serum into his blood stream. The chief medical officer, Martin Rackham laughed hysterically. Kalin was not amused. His over dramatic manner was gone, and he spoke in a clear dry voice.
"That is the last time I am letting you try sub-routines on 'calming frantic patients.' Give me my key to my room. And don't inject me with that stress drug again. It really makes me really overreact. I don't know where you got it but must be illegal. There is no way the federation would let that in the wrong hands. I.E yours. I refuse to practice her so called 'calming' programs again. 'Use a live test subject' I said'. 'I will help if I can' I said. There is no way I am going to be that test subject for your absurd crash courses Rackham. Use a simulation. Nina is hologram It should be a perfect match." He took a deep breath and sighed, eyes closed. When they opened he was smiling. "You know Nina; I think those programs worked, but the medication you gave me to get me into that state...no way. Far too strong." His face became thoughtful for a moment. "You know, it might be useful for a stimulant though."
Rackham was still laughing, his head buried in his hands. Kalin rounded on him, glaring. But then he smiled. "You know Sir, you look a little down. Perhaps you need a little energy." Rackham began to splutter excuses, as Kalin advanced. "Sir, I must insist. I know you 'technically' out rank me, but I think I can order you to do this...Come on...Doctors orders…"He lunged forward, as Rackham leapt backward, narrowly dodging the nib of the hypospray filled with the drug.
Sophie had already taken a few steps into sickbay when she noticed the chaos. She shivered, she was so cold. The yeoman had woken up that morning not feeling that well, but had tried to ignore it and had just started her shift, hoping it would go away. Yet it hadn't. She was cold, but her face was glowing, her muscles ached and her head hurt.
Surprised by the scene in front of her, she kept standing where she was. She tried to figure out what was going on and why the Lieutenant was chasing Rackham with medication. She smiled a bit, at least it seemed like they were having fun.
As Kalin had Rackham backed up against the wall, he saw Sophie out of the corner of his eyes. He frowned when he saw the state she was in, but smiled again when he recognized her.
"Hello again miss. What can I get you?" At this point, Rackham had regained control of himself and went to the medicine vial cabinet, to fetch what ever it was she needed.
"I don't know," Sophie said with a shrug, "I don't feel so well. I think I'm a bit feverish. Head hurts, muscles are complaining." As she approached the medical officers they could see that she was looking rather pale as well.
Kalin reached for the tricorder, but Nina had got there first. She Held the tricorder near Sophie, and inspected the view screen. A few beeps were heard, and she looked up after viewing the results.
"She seems to have a rather strong case of Levodian flu. I suggest a variation of Unefrazine to treat it. Preferably the human kind." Kalin reached out, and guided Sophie to one of the beds. "You may want to lie down for a while."
Sophie climbed on the bed and let out a sigh as she lied down. She felt tired as well so she didn't complain. She hated being ill though. To her sickbay wasn't the happiest place to be and she usually had better things to do than just lying down.
"Levodian flu? What's that? How long does that last?" she asked. It didn't sound too dangerous, just a flu, but you could never know. She shivered again and decided that it probably wasn't that bad. She had always been optimistic by nature so she didn't worry too much about this. "So one shot of that unif...stuff and I'm cured, right?" She said it with a bit of a grin, because she knew it usually didn't work like that, but she did hope that she would start to feel better soon.
Kalin smiled as well, looking away only for a moment, to collect the hypospray Rackham had prepared, then turned his attention back to Sophie. "Not quite, but it should make the flue more bearable. Levodian Flu, is similar to ordinary flu, but it only lasts one day. Because of this it is not normally fatal, or even that dangerous, but while you have it you will still be vulnerable. I suggest you spend the night here. It should stop others from contracting it, and you we are here, so you nothing...bad...will happen." He then gentle pushed the nip to Sophie’s neck, and pressed the button. I small audible hiss was heard.
"Great…" Sophie complained. A night in sickbay, just what she had planned. She sighed, "oh well, if it's only for one night, I guess I can live with it. Beside, it's been a while since I've spend a night in sickbay. Though I hope this time I actually sleep." She smiled thinking back, but shivered again. She was really cold. "Tell you what, if you have a blanket, I'll tell you the story," she said softly.
Rackham tossed a blanket to Kalin, and he laid it over her. "I'm, all ears."
Sophie curled up under the blanket and seemed to relax a bit. She still felt horrible, but at least she now was somewhat warmer. "Well, my former ship traveled mainly along the Klingon border. It was a science vessel, so we didn't see them much." She coughed, but continued. "Until we were following a trail of something, don't know what anymore, but it would have led us into their territory. Which called for a diplomatic intervention. The nearest Klingon ship invited us for 'dinner'. I guess it was just to impress us or something. Eva, the captain, wanted me there, as her yeoman, but also because I speak a bit of Klingon."
She rested her head on the pillow for a moment, trying to get the story straight, but her head felt full. She occasionally trailed off and spoke a bit softer. "It eh, they eh.. I mean, they served gagh. Now I'm a vegetarian, but there was no polite way to decline the meal, so I just had to eat it. I can tell you, it's not only the most disgusting thing I ever ate, but apparently Klingon food and I don't agree." Despite her illness she chuckled. "It's a miracle I still have all my intestines."
Kalin and Rackham laughed, but Nina frowned. "Miss, I'm not sure I understand. Gagh is a little alkaline, but not enough to cause extensive damage. It is actually quite healthy when-"
"Nina, she was joking. She had some food, she did not like, and it made her feel ill." Nina, frowned again, but nodded, still trying to grasp the concept of 'humor'.
"Also, I've been a vegetarian all my life," Sophie explained. She knew that replicated meat was no different than replicated vegetables, but she just wasn't used to eating it. "I was raised on Earth and my parents only used non-replicated food, but didn't want to use meat. So my body isn't used to digesting meat, which gives some problems if you have to eat a plate full of it, all of a sudden." She smiled at the hologram. "Still, it was safer than telling the Klingons that I didn't want to eat there food."
"You know Sophie," Kalin continued, "I'm a vegetarian as well. Maybe we could go out for dinner one time?"
"I'm afraid I'm spoken for tonight," she said as she curled up a bit further under the blanket, "but it sounds like a nice plan for when I feel better." She rested her head on the bed and sighed softly. She started to relax a bit, but also started to feel how tired she was. Sophie closed her eyes and the noises around her started to fade.
"Yeah we should do that one time."
